Clinician Biographies

Sandi Chohany is a USEF ‘S’ dressage judge, teacher, clinician and competitor. She lives near Chicago, and (understandably) winters in Santa Barbara. Sandi didn’t start riding until she was 25, but has more than made up for lost time. She started in Open Jumpers, and foxhunted with the Wayne-Dupage (Illinois) Hunt, where she was Whipper-In and 2nd Huntsman for 17 years. In 1979, she moved on to Three-Day Eventing and discovered dressage. She then spent six months studying in Denmark with Rudiger Blume, and a year in Germany with Gerhard Politz.

Sandi’s lengthy list of accomplishments includes:

• USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold medals

• Gold medal, Olympic Festival in Houston, Texas

• 1st place, USDF Horse of the Year (7 times on 4 different horses)

• Arabian U.S. National Champion (10 times at various levels on multiple horses)

• 9 horses of various breeds and 5 students trained to Grand Prix

• 2 students named USDF Junior Dressage Champions

Trenna Atkins has been instructing and training Dressage for over 35 years, riding and competing horses from Training through FEI.  Trenna has been a USEF judge since 1986 and is a "Senior" rated judge for over 10 years.

As a rider, Trenna earned her Bronze and Silver medals with USDF and has won Regional and National awards, including two National USDF Horse of the Year Awards in Musical Freestyle. Many of Trenna's students have also won USDF Regional Championships and have achieved their USDF Bronze and Silver medals.  Her instructing includes many adult amateurs, FEI young riders, and eventing students and enjoys teaching all levels of dressage.

In 2003, Trenna became part of the Faculty for the Learner Judges Program of USDF and is especially interested in helping to improve training of Dressage Judges with the use of multimedia.

Barbi Breen-Gurley has been an active dressage trainer and instructor since 1970 after attaining her bhsai from Moat House, England. She has won numerous local, state and national championships each year and has been on the usef Long List and Developing Rider list several times on her different horses through the years. She is a usdf Gold Medalist and has trained seven of her horses to the Grand Prix level.

She is a Senior Dressage Judge and Quadrille judge. She currently competes on her three Dutch Warmblood horses. With Octango, a Contango brother to Ravel, she won the Intermediare (2008) and Grand Prix Freestyles (2009) for both the state and Western Regional Finals. In his first season at The Grand Prix, Octango earned numerous scores over 66%.

Barbi has co-authored a book with Janet Emmons, Enlightened Riding, which is soon to be released in its second edition. In addition they have released an audio cd series on “guided imagery.”
